A Monkeytype alternative with games and error analysis

Presspace keeps what people like about Monkeytype, a clean test that starts on your first key, and adds the part it leaves out: what your mistakes are, and something fun to do about them.

Presspace is a free Monkeytype alternative for when a clean number is not enough. It has the same kind of minimal test, Tab to restart and no sign-up, and then shows you why you are slow: a heatmap of the keys you miss, your slowest words, a full replay and one-click drills. When practice gets dull, there are 26 typing games.

Why do people look for a Monkeytype alternative?

Usually not because Monkeytype is bad. It is an excellent test. People look elsewhere when they plateau and the number stops telling them anything, when they want lessons rather than tests, when they want to race real people, or when they want practice that feels like a game. Each of those has a different best answer.

What stays the same?

The test itself will feel familiar. The clock starts on your first keystroke, Tab starts again, and you choose time (15 seconds to 10 minutes) or word count (10 to 100) above the words. Net and raw WPM, accuracy and consistency are all on the results screen. Tape mode, a pace caret, Zen, quotes, punctuation and numbers are there, as are 64 themes and 22 fonts.

Where is Monkeytype still the better choice?

Be honest with yourself about why you are switching. If you type in a language other than English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Italian, stay with Monkeytype: it has more than 100. The same goes for code in languages beyond our 6. If you want ads switched off completely, Monkeytype lets you do that and Presspace does not. And its community is far larger than ours.

Questions people ask

What is the best Monkeytype alternative?

It depends on what you miss. For seeing why you are slow and practising through games, try Presspace. For live races against other people, try TypeRacer. For algorithmic touch typing lessons, try Keybr. For a one minute test in dozens of languages, try 10FastFingers. All four are free.

Is there a Monkeytype alternative with games?

Yes. Presspace has 26 typing games next to its typing test, including a 3D space shooter, a rhythm game, a street race and a bomb to defuse, plus training games like Sudden Death and Memory. They all run in the browser with no download or account.

Is there a Monkeytype alternative without ads?

Monkeytype itself lets you switch its ads off in settings. Keybr, TypeRacer, typing.com and TypingClub sell paid tiers without ads. Presspace is free and supported by ads, with no paid tier, so if a completely ad-free test matters most to you, Monkeytype with ads off is the honest answer.

Will my WPM be the same on Presspace?

It should be close. Both count five characters as a word and only count correctly typed words in net WPM. Word lists differ, so expect a few WPM either way. Take three tests on each and compare the averages rather than a single best.

Can I bring my Monkeytype settings over?

There is no import, but the settings that matter most are all there: tape mode, a pace caret, Zen, punctuation and numbers, quick restart with Tab, 64 themes and 22 fonts. Press Ctrl and K together to find any setting by name.

Try it in a minute

Tab restarts, the clock starts on your first key, and the heatmap is waiting at the end. No sign-up.
