Twelve lessons, from the home row to full sentences. Each one has a speed and an accuracy target, and you move on by passing it.

How the lessons work

Each lesson focuses on one group of keys or one skill and draws from a fixed set of practice words, so the same movements repeat until they stick. Every lesson has a target speed and a target accuracy, and you pass by hitting both in the same attempt. Getting to the end is not enough. Passing opens the next lesson. If your best recorded speed already beats a lesson's target by 15 WPM or more, it opens straight away, so experienced typists can jump ahead to the parts they need.

The speed targets are modest on purpose and the accuracy targets are strict. Speed comes with repetition. Accuracy has to be built in from the start, because a mistake you practise is a mistake you learn.

Drills from your own weak keys

The keys you type on Presspace feed a keyboard heatmap in the Stats panel, with accuracy, speed and finger views. When a key keeps failing or lagging, start a weak-key drill: every word in it contains the keys you are working on. The results screen offers the same after any test. Click a key that slipped, or one of your slowest words, and it becomes a drill.

Tips for getting through

  • Do not look down. F and J have small bumps so you can find home by touch. Lesson 1 is where that habit starts.
  • Repeat rather than rush. A lesson you pass comfortably will stay with you. One you scrape through on the tenth attempt might not.
  • Keep sessions short. Fifteen or twenty minutes most days does more than one long session a week.

For the method behind the course, read the touch typing guide. When you finish, measure yourself on the 1 minute typing test, and for practice that feels less like practice, try the typing games.

Questions people ask

How long do the typing lessons take?

Each attempt is a short set of practice lines, so it takes a minute or two. How long the course takes depends on how quickly you reach each target. Many people repeat a lesson several times before passing it, and that repetition is the point.

Can I skip lessons I already know?

In effect, yes. If your best recorded speed beats a lesson's target by 15 WPM or more, that lesson opens straight away. Otherwise each lesson opens when you pass the one before it.

What should I do after finishing all twelve lessons?

Replay any lesson to sharpen up, and switch to drills built from your own results. The keyboard heatmap in the Stats panel shows your weakest keys, and one click builds a test where every word contains them.
