Accessibility

Accessibility statement

Presspace should work for everyone who wants to type better, whatever their eyesight, hands or equipment. This page sets out what we support, what we know is not good enough yet, and how to tell us.

What we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the reading pages, the typing test and the practice tools. We check pages with the keyboard alone, with the browser zoomed to 200%, with the high-contrast themes and with the reduced motion setting. Some parts of the site do not fully meet that standard yet, and they are listed below.

Settings that help

All of these are in Settings, which you can open from the gear button at the top of the typing test, or by searching with Ctrl + K.

  • High contrast themes: a dark and a light theme built for maximum legibility, alongside more than 60 other themes and an editor for making your own.
  • Dyslexia-friendly reading: one button switches the words you type to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for low vision, with airy line spacing.
  • Text size and spacing: six text sizes from extra small to double extra large, one to five visible lines, three line spacings, and left or centred text.
  • Reduce motion: removes transitions and animated backgrounds, and calms the games down. If your device is set to reduce motion, Presspace follows it automatically.
  • Caret and feedback: five caret styles, including a block and an underline, with blinking and smooth movement each switchable. A typo indicator can show the key you actually pressed.
  • On-screen keyboard: shows the next key to press, coloured by the finger that should press it.
  • Sound: an optional thud for mistakes and tick for clean words, so you can hear errors without watching for them. All sound can be switched off.
  • Lazy mode: makes accents optional in other languages, for keyboards without dead keys.
  • No time pressure: Zen typing has no timer and no score, and every timed test can be restarted at any moment.

Using the site with a keyboard

Everything on Presspace can be reached and used without a mouse. A skip link at the top of each page jumps straight to the typing test or the main content, every control shows a clear focus outline, and panels close with Esc. If Tab as the restart key gets in the way of moving between controls, switch Quick restart to Esc, Enter or off in Settings.

Screen readers

The typing test announces the word to type next through a live region, so a screen reader user can take a test without seeing the words. Results are announced when a test ends. Panels and dialogs are labelled, pages use one main heading with a logical heading order, and decorative icons are hidden from assistive technology.

Known limitations

  • Arcade games. Most of the 20 arcade games are drawn on a canvas and rely on seeing where words are on screen. They are not usable with a screen reader. The typing tests, lessons, challenges and training games are the better choice.
  • 3D games need WebGL and a reasonably capable graphics chip, and include motion that the reduce motion setting softens but cannot remove entirely.
  • Colour in results. Correct and incorrect letters are shown mainly by colour. The high-contrast themes make the difference strong, the typo indicator can show the key you pressed, and the mistake sound gives an audible cue, but on some themes the difference is colour alone.
  • Advertisements are supplied by Google and we do not control their content. They are labelled, kept away from the typing area and never cover content.
  • Character art on profiles and leaderboards is decorative and described only by the typist's name.

We are working through this list. If any of it stops you using the site, please tell us, because it changes what we fix first.

Feedback and contact

If something on Presspace is hard to use, or you need information in a different form, write to presspaceorg@gmail.com or use the contact page. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do and, if you can, the browser and any assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within a few days.

Technical details

Presspace is built with standard HTML, CSS and JavaScript and works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. JavaScript is needed for the typing test, games and tools; the guides and information pages can be read without it.
