Help and FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most. If yours is not here, write to us from the contact page and a real person will reply.

Getting started

How do I start a typing test?

Open the typing test and start typing. There is no start button: the clock begins on your first keystroke. Type each word and press Space to move on. When the time runs out you get your speed, accuracy and a breakdown of where the time went.

Do I need an account?

No. Every test, game, lesson and statistic works without one, and your results stay in your browser. Signing in is optional and only adds the public leaderboards, a profile with your character, and sync between devices.

Which test length should I choose?

One minute is the standard benchmark and the best for tracking progress. Fifteen and thirty seconds are good for quick bursts and warming up. Two, five and ten minutes show whether you can hold your speed, which is what employer typing tests usually check. The good typing speed guide puts your number in context.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, with the on-screen keyboard, though phone typing is a different skill from keyboard typing and scores are not comparable. Most games are built for a physical keyboard. For real practice, use a laptop or desktop, or connect a keyboard to your tablet.

Keyboard shortcuts

KeysWhat it does
TabStart a fresh test (you can change this key, or switch it off, in Settings)
EscStop the current run, or finish an open-ended one like Zen
Ctrl + KSearch every mode, game, theme and setting
Ctrl + EnterStart a new test from anywhere on the page

On a Mac, Cmd works in place of Ctrl. If you want to learn the shortcuts in other programs too, the shortcut trainer drills 82 of them.

Scores and results

How is my WPM calculated?

Net words per minute counts the characters in every correctly typed word, plus one space per word, divides by five, then divides by the test length in minutes. A word with a mistake left in it earns nothing. The about page has every formula, and how WPM is calculated works through examples.

Why is my score different from another typing site?

Sites count differently. We credit only words you typed correctly, the same convention as 10FastFingers, Typeracer and Monkeytype. Sites that give credit for correct letters inside wrong words will read higher. Different word lists also change the number a little.

What is the difference between net and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Net WPM counts only correct words. The gap between them is what your mistakes cost. If it is wide, slowing down slightly will usually raise your net score.

What does the keyboard heatmap show?

Open the Stats panel to see every key coloured by accuracy, speed or finger. Warm keys are the ones costing you most. Click any key and you get a test where every word contains it.

Games and challenges

How do I play a typing game?

Pick one from the typing games page. Each game opens with a short card explaining how to play, and starts when you are ready. Most games last a minute or two, and if you switch to another tab the game pauses until you come back.

A 3D game shows a blank screen. What can I do?

Starfall, Nitro, Key Hero, Key Reflex, Stack and Bomb Defusal need WebGL. Make sure hardware acceleration is switched on in your browser settings and the browser is up to date. Every other game works without it.

What are challenges?

Normal timed tests with one rule bent, such as no Backspace, left hand only or backwards words. Each one trains something a plain test leaves out. There are 25 on the challenges page.

Can I type in another language?

Yes. Open the test options above the words and choose English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Italian. There are pages for each: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. Lazy mode in Settings makes accents optional.

Accounts and leaderboards

How do I get on the leaderboards?

Sign in with Google from the button at the top of any page, choose a username and play. Your best runs appear on the leaderboards a moment later, next to your character. The timed English tests and the Daily are verified by our server; other boards are checked for scores that could not be real.

Can I keep my results private?

Yes. Under Privacy in your account menu you can make your profile private, stay off the public boards entirely, or hide single sections such as your country or recent runs.

How do I delete my account?

Open your profile settings and choose to delete the account. The profile, ranked runs, scores and the synced copy of your progress are removed for good. Results kept in your browser stay there until you clear them.

Your data

My results disappeared. Can I get them back?

If you were not signed in, your results lived only in your browser. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browser loses them, and we have no copy. Use Export JSON in the Stats panel now and then to keep a backup, and Import to load it elsewhere. Signing in syncs your progress automatically.

How do I move my results to another computer?

Either sign in on both, or export your data as JSON from the Stats panel on the first computer and import it on the second.

Is my custom text uploaded anywhere?

No. Text you paste into the custom test stays in your browser and is never sent to us or anyone else.

Fixing problems

The keyboard sound does not play.

Browsers block audio until you interact with a page, so press a key first. If it is still silent, check the sound setting in Settings, your device volume and your output device. Recorded sound packs download the first time you pick them, so a slow connection can delay the first few clicks.

Some keys do not register, or register twice.

Try the keyboard tester. It shows every key as you press it, so you can see whether the problem is the keyboard or the page. Browser extensions that change keyboard input can also interfere; try a private window to rule them out.

The page looks wrong or will not load.

Refresh the page, then make sure your browser is up to date. Presspace supports current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If it still looks wrong, tell us which browser and device you are using.

Ads and privacy

Why are there ads?

Ads pay for hosting and keep everything free, with no paid tier. We keep them away from the typing area and the games, and they never cover what you are reading or typing.

How do I change my cookie choices?

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, use the Privacy choices link at the bottom of the page to change or withdraw consent. Anywhere, you can manage ad personalisation in Google's ad settings. The privacy policy explains what is collected and why.
