Terms of use

Presspace is free to use and asks very little of you. These terms set out the few rules there are, what we promise, and what we cannot promise.

In plain words

Use the site to practise and measure your typing. Do not try to break it, flood it or fake results with scripts. An account is optional; if you make one, keep your name decent and your runs your own. We do our best but give no guarantees, and your custom text never leaves your device.

Agreeing to these terms

By using presspace.org (Presspace) you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. "We" and "us" mean the small team that runs Presspace. Our privacy policy explains how data is handled and forms part of these terms.

What Presspace is

Presspace is a free, browser-based typing test and practice site. It offers timed and word-count tests, quote, code and custom-text modes, typing games and challenges, lessons, a keyboard shortcut trainer, Dictation, a keyboard heatmap and detailed statistics. It costs nothing and needs no account. An optional account adds leaderboards, a public profile and sync between devices. We may add, change or remove features at any time, and we may pause or stop the service, though we will try to give notice of anything significant.

Who can use it

Anyone with a web browser. Presspace is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 13. Younger typists are welcome to practise with a parent, guardian or teacher who is aware of these terms.

Acceptable use

Use Presspace for what it is for: practising and measuring typing. You agree not to:

  • Use scripts, bots, macros or any automation to type, play or produce scores, or present a result made that way as a real measure of your ability.
  • Scrape, crawl or bulk-download the site, its word lists, texts or other content, beyond what search engines normally do to index public pages.
  • Try to break, overload or disrupt the site, get around its security, or interfere with other people's use of it.
  • Copy the site, or substantial parts of its design or code, to run as your own service.
  • Click ads fraudulently, use tools that generate fake ad views or clicks, or encourage anyone else to.
  • Use the site in a way that breaks the law where you are.

Pasting text into a test voids that run on purpose. A score you did not type is not worth keeping.

Your results

WPM, accuracy, consistency and every other figure are for personal practice and self-assessment. We take care to measure them correctly and explain our formulas on the about page, but results can vary with your device, browser, keyboard and connection, and they may not match a particular employer's or school's test. Please do not rely on a Presspace score as an official or certified measure of typing ability.

Without an account, your results, settings and achievements are stored only in your browser. They can be lost if you clear your browser data, use a private window or change device. Use Export JSON in the Stats panel to keep a copy. With an account, a copy is also kept with the account.

Accounts and leaderboards

You need to be at least 13 to create an account. Keep one account per person, keep your sign-in to yourself, and choose a username and profile that do not impersonate anyone, offend, or advertise.

Leaderboard places are earned by typing. Every ranked run is scored by our server from its keystrokes, and runs that look automated, arrive impossibly fast or do not add up are held for review. We may remove any run or score from the leaderboards, rename a username that breaks these terms, and suspend or delete accounts used to cheat or abuse the site. If you think we got it wrong, write to us.

Your profile and ranked results are public. You can delete your account at any time from Edit profile.

Characters, items, titles, levels and achievements are part of the fun of the site. They have no monetary value, cannot be bought or sold, and may be changed or rebalanced as the site develops. Your character and title are shown publicly, so the same rules apply to them as to your username.

You choose who sees your profile. Making it private, or keeping your runs off the public boards, can be changed at any time in your privacy settings.

Text you supply

Text you paste into Custom mode stays on your device. It is not uploaded to us or anyone else, and you keep all rights to it. You are responsible for having the right to use anything you paste.

Intellectual property

The design, layout, source code, original writing, graphics and branding of Presspace belong to us and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property law. You may link to any page and share your own results freely.

Some material comes from others and keeps its own terms:

  • The passages in Quote mode and Marathon are in the public domain.
  • The word lists are built from common vocabulary.
  • Icons are from Lucide, under the ISC licence.
  • Keyboard sound recordings come from kbsim by Thomas Lai and Mechvibes by Hai Nguyen, under the MIT licence.
  • The 3D games use Three.js, under the MIT licence.

Nothing in these terms limits what those licences allow.

Presspace is paid for by advertising served through Google AdSense. We keep ad units away from the typing area and the games, but we do not choose or endorse individual ads, and we are not responsible for the products, services or websites they promote. The same applies to links to other sites. If you follow one, that site's own terms and privacy policy apply.

The site also relies on services run by others, including Google Analytics, Google AdSense, Google Fonts and Netlify hosting. Each works under its own terms, and we are not responsible for their availability or conduct.

No warranty

Presspace is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or uninterrupted availability. We do not promise that the site will always be online, free of errors, or free of harmful components, or that every figure will be exact on every device.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss arising from your use of Presspace, or from being unable to use it. This includes:

  • loss of results, settings or other data stored in your browser;
  • interruptions caused by hosting, network problems or maintenance;
  • any decision made on the basis of a typing score, for work, study, hiring or competition.

Because the service is free, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to zero, or to the lowest amount the law permits where a limit of zero is not allowed. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, and nothing limits rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the top shows the current version. If a change is significant, we will say so on this page. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Mozambique, where Presspace started, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. This does not take away any protection given to you by the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live.
