How do I add a typing test to my website?
Choose the colours, length and size above, press Copy the code and paste it into your page as HTML. On WordPress, use a Custom HTML block; on Squarespace, Wix or Google Sites, use their embed or code block. The test appears straight away and needs no account, script tag or API key. It resizes to fit the column it sits in.
Who is the typing test widget for?
- Schools and teachers. Put a timed test on a class page or learning platform. Pupils get a speed and accuracy figure in a minute, with no logins to manage and nothing to install.
- Blogs and writing sites. A post about keyboards, productivity or touch typing is better with a test readers can take on the spot.
- HR and recruiting. Let candidates check their speed on your careers page before a role that asks for a minimum WPM. For a formal assessment, ask them to run the full test and share the result.
What does the widget measure?
Each run is a 30 or 60 second test of common English words. When the clock stops, it shows net WPM (correctly typed words only), accuracy (correct keystrokes out of all keystrokes), raw WPM (every keystroke, mistakes included) and the number of words typed correctly. These are the same rules the full Presspace typing test uses, so the numbers line up.
What happens to what visitors type?
Nothing leaves their browser. The widget runs the whole test locally, sends no keystrokes or results anywhere, sets no cookies and loads no adverts or analytics. The only requests it makes are for its own script and styles, and for its fonts, which come from Google Fonts. If you need the detail for your own privacy notice, our privacy policy covers it.
Can I show my typing speed on my own site?
Yes, with a small badge for a GitHub README, a forum signature or a personal page. If you have a Presspace account, open your profile and press Badge: that one shows your best verified 60 second run and links to your profile. No account? Type your speed below and copy the code. It is marked self-reported, because nobody checked it.
Questions people ask
Is the typing test widget free?
Yes. The widget is free for any website, including school, company and commercial sites. You do not need an account or an API key: copy the code, paste it into your page and it works. Please leave the small Powered by Presspace link in place.
Does the widget show ads or set cookies?
No. The widget page loads no adverts, no analytics and no tracking scripts, and it sets no cookies. It loads its own script and styles, plus fonts from Google Fonts, and the test runs entirely in your visitor's browser. Nothing they type is sent anywhere.
How is the score worked out?
The same way as the main Presspace test and most typing tests: net words per minute counts the characters in correctly typed words, plus one space per word, divided by five and by the minutes of the test. Accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes.
Can I change the size, colours or test length?
Yes. Pick dark, light or your visitor's system setting, a 30 or 60 second test, and a height. The width is fluid, so the widget fills the column it sits in up to the maximum width you choose. Visitors can switch between 30 and 60 seconds inside the widget too.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. Tapping the words opens the on-screen keyboard and the layout adapts down to narrow phone widths. Typing speed on glass is usually well below keyboard speed, so the result is best compared with other phone results.
Can students or candidates see more detail?
The widget shows speed, accuracy, raw speed and words. The results link opens the full Presspace test, which adds a keyboard heatmap, your slowest words, missed keys, a replay and one-click drills for the keys you miss most.
