Real sentences from real writers, with every capital and comma left in. The author appears when you finish.

What makes it different

A standard test gives you lowercase words with no punctuation. Real writing looks nothing like that. The quote test hands you a real passage, anything from a one-line saying to a full paragraph, with capitals, commas, apostrophes and full stops exactly as written. It runs until you finish the passage, and the last word submits itself, so there is no need to press Space at the end.

The pool holds more than 70 passages from public domain writers. Pick short, medium or long on the options row, or any to mix them up. The author is revealed when you finish.

How it is scored

The rules match the timed tests, except the clock runs for as long as you take. A word only counts if every character matches, so a missing capital or a dropped comma makes that word wrong. Accuracy is correct keystrokes over all keystrokes. Because a passage is fixed, typing the same quote twice gives you a fair before-and-after comparison, which a random word list cannot.

Tips for punctuated text

  • Shift with the opposite hand. A capital A takes the right Shift, a capital P takes the left. Using one Shift key for everything is one of the most common speed caps. Lesson 7 in the typing lessons drills exactly this.
  • Little finger on the apostrophe. On a standard US layout the apostrophe sits under the right little finger. Reaching for it with the ring finger pulls the whole hand off the home row.
  • Treat punctuation as part of the word. Read a word and its comma as one unit. Pausing after a word to go looking for the comma is where quote runs lose most of their time.
  • Keep long quotes even. On a long passage, aim for a steady pace instead of bursts, and check the consistency figure afterwards.

Who it suits

Writers, students and office workers who mostly type sentences, and anyone getting ready for a copy test that uses paragraphs of prose. A quote score is a better guide to how fast you will write an email than a word-list score. When you want longer stretches of prose, the 5 minute test with punctuation turned on is the next step. The touch typing guide covers the right finger for every key, punctuation included.

Questions people ask

Why is my WPM lower on quotes than on random words?

Quotes include capitals, punctuation and longer words, all of which need extra reaches and the Shift key. A drop of several WPM compared with a plain word test is normal. The gap shrinks as your Shift and punctuation habits improve.

How long are the quotes?

Choose short, medium or long on the options row, or any to mix them. Short quotes are a line or so and long ones are full passages. Your score is based on the time you take to finish the whole quote.

Where do the quotes come from?

The passages come from public domain writing by well-known authors. The author is shown on the results screen, so you find out who you were typing once you finish.
